Stuffed Modak (Sweet)

This, easy rice flour sweet dish is mainly prepared during Vinayagar Chathurthi. But in my house, I prepare this atleast once in a month, as it is my hubby's all time favorite snack. It is very easy to prepare, with very few ingredients.
There are two methods of preparing the rice flour dough. One is soaking the rice, grinding it into a smooth paste and process it in a non stick pan to make a dough. Second method is that, use instant rice flour and add boiling water and make the dough.
Both the methods give more or less equal results, but I prefer the 1st method, that is by soaking the rice. But in case if you forget to forget to soak the rice, then use the 2nd method. However, here I will show you the 1st method

Ingredients

For the Rice Dough

  • Sona masuri Rice - 1 cup
  • Water to grind the rice - 1 cup
  • Water to make the dough - 1 cup
  • Salt - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 1 tsp

For the Sweet stuffing

  • Grated Coconut - 1 cup
  • Grated Jaggery - 3/4 cup
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Cardamom Powder - 1 tsp
  • Ginger powder - 1 tsp (Optional)

Method

For the Rice Dough

  • Wash the rice well and soak them in 1 cup of water for at least 4 hours. Grind the rice along with the soaked water, in to a very smooth paste.
  • In a pan  (I used non-stick to ease my job) , bring 1 cup of water to boil. Add salt and oil to the water.
  • When it starts to bubble, add the ground rice
  • Keep the flame in low and keep stirring it continuously breaking the lumps. It will start getting thicker.
  • It will become like a dough in some time. Switch off the heat, cover it and let it rest for 15 minutes.

For the sweet Stuffing

  • Heat a pan and add  1 tblspn of water and bring this to boil
  • Add jaggery. It will start melting. When it melts completely strain it to remove any impurities
  • Pour this strained jaggery syrup once more in the pan and bring this to boil. Keep the heat low
  • Add  grated coconut, cardamom powder and ginger powder. Keep stirring for a minute and then turn off the heat. Your stuffing is now ready. Allow it to cool down completely.

How to proceed?

  • Take a portion of your rice dough and flaten it in your palm and place a small portion of coconut stuffing on it.
  • Bring the edges together and seal it. Repeat the same for all.
  • Grease your idli plate and place the modaks. Steam in a medium heat for about 10 minutes.
  • Once done, remove the modaks and transfer it on to a plate.
  • Modaks are eaten when it is cooled down completely.
