Stuffed Urad dal Kozhukattai

This is such a yummy dish, made out of urad dal which is covered with the rice flour dough. This is mostly served in the temples during Vinayagar Chathurthi. This can be even served as a breakfast.

Ingredients

For the Rice Dough

  • Sona masuri Rice - 1 cup
  • Water to grind the rice - 1 cup
  • Water to make the dough - 1 cup
  • Salt - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 1 tsp

For the Stuffing

  • Urad dal (whole) - 1/2 cup
  • Green chillies - 3 to 4
  • Oil - 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal - 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - few
  • Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Salt - to taste

Method

For the Rice Dough

  • Wash the rice well and soak them in 1 cup of water for at least 4 hours. Grind the rice along with the soaked water, in to a very smooth paste.
  • In a pan  (I used non-stick to ease my job) , bring 1 cup of water to boil. Add salt and oil to the water.
  • When it starts to bubble, add the ground rice
  • Keep the flame in low and keep stirring it continuously breaking the lumps. It will start getting thicker.
  • It will become like a dough in some time. Switch off the heat, cover it and let it rest for 15 minutes.

For the Stuffing

  • Soak whole urad dal in water for about 1 hour.

  • Grind green chillies in a mixer and then add the soaked urad dal and grind it again in to a coarse paste.

  • Make sure it is not smoothly ground.
  • Transfer it to a bowl. Add salt and mix well.

  • Grease your Idli plate and place the urad dal mixture on it.

  • Steam in a medium heat for about 10 minutes. It should be properly cooked.

  • Allow it to cool down a bit and crumble them.

  • Heat oil in a pan and crackle mustard seeds. Add Urad dal and fry till it starts becoming brown.

  • Add the curry leaves and  urad dal mixture and fry for  a minute or two.

  • Turn off the heat and add grated coconut. Stuffing is now ready

How to proceed?

  • Take a portion of your rice dough and flaten it in your palm and place a small portion of urad dal stuffing on it.

  • Bring the edges together and seal it. Repeat the same for all.

  • Grease your idli plate and place the kozhukattais on it. Steam in a medium heat for about 10 minutes.
  • Once done, remove them and transfer it on to a plate.
  • Serve
